DIY Chalkboard Window Sign
One of the most fun projects I did for the wedding was this DIY Chalkboard Window Sign! We took the original windows from the cottage and converted them into the seating charts and bar menu. I really felt like this added a old country garden flair to our wedding reception.
It was a really easy project to make, it just took a little time and trial and error with the chalkboard spray paint.
What You’ll Need For DIY Chalkboard Window Sign
- Old Windows
- Duct Tape
- Chalkboard Spray Paint
- Old Newspaper
- Chalkboard Marker
How To Make Them
- Take your old windows and clean them with glass cleaner and allow to dry.
- Use duct tape to cover frame and mullions (if your windows have them)
- Once the frames are fully covered, lay the window on the ground (outside) on top of the old newspapers
- Shake the spray can really well and start farther away from the glass and slowly work your way in until the glass becomes equally covered.
- Keep the spray can moving the entire time you’re painting until glass is fully covered
Pro Tip: Don’t do what I did the first time and spray too close. If you do, bubbles will begin to form and you won’t have a smooth writing surface.
I let the windows sit out for at least 24 hours to make sure the chalkboard paint dried thoroughly. If you have to bring the windows inside, make sure it’s in a well ventilated room (or a room that’s not used often). The reason is because the paint creates a strong odor while it’s drying.
When you go to write on the chalkboard, the marker can be easily erased with a lightly damped paper towel.
Here’s How Mine Turned Out For the Wedding!
Luckily, I still have plenty of windows left in my dad’s shed to play around with for future projects! You’ll probably find antique windows easiest on Facebook Marketplace, antique stores, and flea markets.
If you’re not a bride looking for whimsical antique details to add to your wedding, this DIY chalkboard window sign would be really cool to use as the family chalkboard or to hang in your office.
Happy DIY’ing Y’all,
