Apple Butter Old Fashioned

Nothing says a fall cocktail like one with bourbon and apple butter! This Apple Butter Old Fashioned is made with homemade delish apple butter in the crockpot and this cocktail is one of the many ways to enjoy it!

When the fall and holiday season rolls around, most people start to think that seasonal recipes start to become more scarce. However, with a little imagination, you can create some amazing seasonal fall recipes!

I always love to look up what’s in season to get ideas on what fruits and vegetables I can highlight in my next recipe or drink. Right now, fresh apples are everywhere and I love how versatile they can be! This apple butter old fashioned shows that off beautifully so let’s get to it!

What You’ll Need To Make an Apple Butter Old Fashioned

for one serving

  • 4 oz apple cider
  • 1/2 oz lemon juice
  • 1 tbs of apple butter
  • 2.5 oz of bourbon
  • Dash of orange bitters
  • Sliced apples and cinnamon sticks for garnish
Apple Butter

Apple Butter Recipe

  • 2 pounds of honey crisp apples (about 6 apples) diced
  • 1.5 cups of apple cider
  • Juice of 1/2 a lemon
  • 1 tbs of vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup of real maple syrup
  • 1 tbs of nutmeg
  • 3 cinnamon sticks or 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon
  • pinch of salt

Add all the ingredients to the slow cooker and cook on high for 4-5 hours, stirring halfway. Remove the cinnamon sticks and transfer the apples to a blender. Puree until smooth and return the mixture to the crockpot. Cook on high for another hour uncovered to allow the apple butter to slightly thicken. Taste and adjust the sweetness level by adding more maple syrup. My family likes their apple butter on the sweeter side so I end up adding 1.25 cups total.

Let the apple butter cool and store in glass jars for up to a month in the fridge.

How To Make It

In a cocktail shaker, add the apple cider, lemon juice, apple butter, and bourbon. Give it a dry shake (no ice) for about 10-15 seconds. Pour your old fashioned in a glass with ice (here’s the ice cube mold I use for bourbon cocktails) and hit it with a few dashes of orange bitters.

Garnish with sliced apples, cinnamon sticks, or a rosemary sprig and enjoy!

These gorgeous leather rocks glasses are from Clayton & Crume, a small southern business based out of Kentucky! They have so many leather goods that would make a great gift idea for the holidays!
