Blood Orange Boston Sour

Late last year, I found myself absolutely falling in love with the classic sour cocktail. I fell for their sophisticated looks and stayed for their simplicity and frothy consistency. This Blood Orange Boston Sour is a gorgeous winter cocktail that’s perfect for Valentine’s Day or for a Friday night happy hour at home!

Blood Oranges are in season from late December to the end of March (depending on the variety you buy). Sometimes they’re a little difficult to source so whenever I stumble upon some at the store, I always grab a bag! I adore blood oranges because they’re a tad sweeter than their other family members. It’s a refreshing kind of sweet and they are so versatile for cocktails (like this Blood Orange Margarita)!

Plus, their natural red hue creates such show stopping cocktails!

So let’s get to it!

What You’ll Need To Make a Blood Orange Boston Sour

serves one

  • 2 oz blood orange juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1.5 oz bourbon
  • 1/2 oz elderflower liqueur
  • 1 oz lemon juice, freshly squeezed
  • 1 egg white
  • blood orange citrus wheel to garnish

How To Make It

First thing’s first, let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Whenever I mention raw egg whites, people start to give me the “deer in the headlights” looks. And I totally get it, because I used to be that person too. The classic sour is made with egg white to only give it the frothy consistency that it’s famous for. You cannot taste the egg whites and as long as your eggs are kept in the refrigerator and are pasteurized, it is safe to consume! There are plenty of substitutes for egg whites for cocktails these days! You could also just leave that part out of the recipe entirely! It will taste exactly the same, just without the froth. So no worries!

In an empty cocktail shaker, add the first five ingredients and dry shake for about 15 seconds. We are shaking without any ice because we’re creating that froth from the egg whites! After shaking, add ice to your shaker and shake again so your sour is well chilled.

In a chilled coupe glass, pour in your Blood Orange Boston Sour and garnish with a blood orange wheel and enjoy!
